Bali Jazz Affair

April 29, 2019

Bali occasionally, cutting through the cacophony of Electronic Dance Music and top 40 hits that reverberates from
almost all major night hubs in Bali’s tourist areas, is the sounds jazz and all that. Admittedly, when one mentions the
top jazz destination for jazz lovers in Southeast Asia, one doesn’t immediately think of Bali.
But some brave souls have boldly trod where no one else has gone before—and succeed.  Unbeknown to most people,
Bali IS one of the top jazz destinations for jazz lovers in the Southeast Asia region and the genre is thriving on the
island.

Many local musicians have been scene stealers in the festival circuits—both at home and abroad—such as guitar
maestro Dewa Budjana, Balawan, Sandy Winarta, Erik Sondhy (aka Mister Finger), Ito Jazz Trio, a 13-year-old piano
prodigy Joey Alexander (who’s 2015 album, My Favorite Things, was nominated for Best Jazz Improvised Solo and
Best Jazz Instrumental Album at the Grammy), and veteran jazz fixture Indra Lesmana has made Bali his home base
starting with 2017’s Sanur Mostly Jazz Festival.

However, the indisputable star is Ryoshi House of Jazz in Seminyak, every jazz lovers’ top destination as they visit
Bali, followed by the internationally-renowned Ubud Village Jazz Festival, which this year is celebrating their 7th
anniversary.

Best place to stay near the Festival

A Jazzy Affair
Even though the colorful Ubud Village Jazz Festival (UVJF) has been attracting avid jazz lovers and musicians from
around the globe—successfully positioning it as one of the top jazz festivals in the world—but the island has played
genial host to jazz before.
Back in 1996, jazz lover and musician Agung Wiryawan opened the (now closed) Jazz Café in Ubud, which created a
ripple effect and spreads jazz into the playlist of many restaurants and cafes in Sanur, Kuta, and Seminyak.
UVJF simply inflamed the crowd further. Set in the relatively modestly-sized enclosure of ARMA (Agung Rai Museum
of Art) Ubud front yard, the Ubud Village Jazz Festival has an intimate feel with simple stages and more focus on the
performances themselves—an exhilarating melting pot of groovy, soulful, instrumental, bebop, and free-styling jazz
artists.
Refreshingly, UVJF was kickstarted by homegrown jazz musicians: Yuri Mahatma, founder of Bali Jazz Community
and Underground Jazz Movement; and Anom Darsana, director, and owner of ANTIDA Music Production, one of the
biggest recording studios in Bali.
Their original idea was to create a festival that is more like a community concert participated by fellow jazz musician
friends and acquaintances looking for a proper joint to do jam sessions.
Along the way, the idea snowballed and grew into a bigger event than expected with the involvement and support of
numerous jazz communities. Thus, the first Ubud Village Jazz Festival swung into existence in 2013.

The Ubud Village Jazz Festival 2019

Save the dating jazz! The 7th outing of UVJF will be held on 16 – 17 August at ARMA Museum and the line-up is
looking promising so far with confirmed performances by American jazz pianist Aaron Goldberg, Austrian Michaela
Rabitsch and Robert Pawlik Quartet, Italian Daniele Gorgone, Australian group Arcing Wires, and Indonesia’s Kopi
Jazz Kediri who’ll imbue inimitable local sounds to jazz.
Venue:
Agung Rai Museum of Art (ARMA), Jl Raya Pengosekan, Ubud.

Jazz Talk
The owner of Ryoshi House of Jazz, Mr. Saigon Togasa’s speech is subtle at first then interspersed with outbursts of
excitable words. The enthusiasm is contagious. Being the pioneer in distilling the sound of jazz and helping to
jumpstart the live music scene in Bali, the jazz aficionado aims for a Blue Note-level fame at his venue where
little-known prodigies display their musical prowess before leaping off into widespread stardom. We’d say he’s
already there…
Were you initially worried that a jazz joint might be too limiting in terms of finding an audience?
I realized that the live music scene that makes money here are the ones playing pop and Top 40 songs, and especially
in Bali where the live music scene is probably 95 percent DJ (music) and the five percent left goes to live music, with
the one percent being jazz (laughs). But I do it for the love of it.
So how did you come about establishing a jazz club in Bali in the first place?
I felt that there was a missing jazz culture in Bali, and wherever I go—from New York to Singapore—the first thing I
always looked for was the jazz club. Then I founded Blue Train in ’98 that plays jazz seven days a week in Double Six,
Seminyak, which unfortunately failed to find an audience, so I had to close it. After that, I kind of lay low for a while,
until Ryoshi moved to our current place, and Rio Sidik, who performed at the opening of the new place (and still
performs here today), suggested why don’t we do it every week? And so that’s how it became a weekly jazz event.
Tell us what you love most about having a jazz venue?
Oh, it’s the energy of it. Many people may not notice it but when the musicians are up there on the stage, they’re
interacting with each other. The bass player might suddenly do something new and the other members would be like,
WTF—and then, in the end, they’ll try to blow each other’s mind! And seeing new talent is also great; we have this
young kid from Yogyakarta named Hiro who plays a killer saxophone or when Joey Alexander (at age 7 and 10,
pre-Grammy nominations) performed with Sandy Winarta and Indra Lesmana and that kid drove those two to their
maximum potential!
How did you set your jazz club apart from the others?
Though we started small, I don’t want to compromise the gig—we set the standard high. We encourage musicians
who play here to express themselves; if they play a cover song, I want them to do it with their own unique style, not
like some karaoke version of it. We often stage jam sessions where we will have senior musicians to play with the
new ones. That’s how we have musicians like Iwan Fals, Indra Lesmana or Dewa Budjana, and international artists
such as Incognito and Earth, Wind & Fire, up on our stage and have jam sessions. Now we have people from all over
curious about the jazz scene in Bali then they come to Ryoshi.
So what’s the difference between the jazz scene then and now?
Of course compared to when I first got here in ’86 now Bali has everything! Before there was nothing here—not even
fresh milk! Today the jazz community is growing, and though there are some jazz clubs, I think we’re still the only one
that allows the musicians to just play and be themselves. We have an average performance of about 20 minutes for
each set or more for jam sessions.
Any new goals for the future?
You know, there aren’t that many jazz clubs in the world but the ones that exist have long term stability and are now
considered legends like Blue Note because many famous jazz artists play there before they become a big star and
make their own history. I want Ryoshi’s House of Jazz to be known like that: as the place where Balawan started, or
Sandy Winarta or Joey Alexander or Indra Gupta. I want it to make its own history.
Address: Jl. Raya Seminyak No.17, Seminyak.
Live Jazz Performance Hours: 9pm – 12pm (every Monday – Wednesday – Friday).

If you want to get the best shopping experience in this place, night time is ideal and so the night market. But the vendors of the market are expert in negotiating and haggling. So, you need to sharpen up your bargaining skill whenever you are visiting this market. Be polite and wear your smile always to get the right price for the right product.
The merchants of the markets love to bargain with the travelers and so the travelers. It is important to make your price baseline before visiting the place. If the shop owners of the downstairs shops lose interest in negotiating if you are trying to get a product at a very low cost, you can try the shops upstairs. You can get many products at the sale or discounted prices there but surely by using your bargaining skills. Love to have different types of fishes for your collection, handmade dresses or bags, tasty authentic local foods, and then the market is just the right choice for you.

You can buy some simple t-shirts and comfortable slippers if you have visited the place with your tight budget.  Sayan Night Market is the best place in Bali, where you can enjoy the street foods, made in complete authentic Balinese way. If you are staying in a hotel in Ubud, you can take a car from your hotel and the place is just thirty minutes away from Ubud by car. You can park your car or bike at the corner of the road or in front of the shops.  You can surely enjoy the best bustling shopping scene here in the market. Many fluorescent lights, give this place an interesting ambiance.

Weaving Bali’s Traditional Heritage

October 01, 2018

The beauty of Indonesian textiles is boundless. Its bright colors and intricate patterns still a part of everyday rural lives, including in Bali as ceremonies are held frequently attended by men and women attired in traditional garments. The patterns signifying various symbolism, from cultural to religious, as well as signaling one’s status in society.

The most popular traditional textiles—and perhaps most widely used across the archipelago—is the batik, which is not a motif but actually the name of the design technique utilizing wax and wax-resistant color dyeing. But batik is all about designing patterns on top of a piece of cloth, while the local Ikat textiles are way more complicated in terms of the process. Ikat (or “to bind” in Indonesian) is a hand-spun and hand-weaved technique on which pattern is dyed into the thread prior to the weaving process. The ikat threads are bound in a pattern so that the threads covered by the binding resist the dye, creating a design. The more binding is done before weaving, the more complicated the pattern. A more complicated technique is the double Ikat where both the warp and weft threads are dyed.

The time-consuming process to create a piece of cloth deemed the real artisans a rare “breed”, luckily a few good Samaritans are holding down the fort to conserve the artform. You’ll find an eclectic collection of fine traditional textiles in Threads of Life Jl. Kajeng No.24, Ubud; Phone: +62 361 972187; threadsoflife.com), their modest showroom has an air of a mini-museum as rows of the textiles are arranged neatly with a sufficiently explanatory signage detailing every piece.

Over 650 pieces in the archive, held in a museum-standard conservation facility.

The gallery practices fair trade business and collaborates with weavers in Bali’s rural eastern regions of Sidemen, Seraya, and the island of Nusa Penida, the proceeds of the sales goes to empowering and supporting the livelihood of these local artisans, thus ensuring the preservation of the craft. It’s an immaculate and exquisite collection, with vivid colors that stem from natural dyes extracted from indigenous floras like the noni or Morinda citrifolia fruit. Due to the painstaking Ikat process and the use of natural dyes, the items on the shop fall into the collectible category with prices start from USD 500 and more for rare and exotic items. If you want to know more about the craft, you can sign up for their regular class about the history of Indonesian textiles and natural dye process.

For more premium collection, other recommended spots in Ubud are Ikat Batik Ubud (Jl. Monkey Forest; www.ikatbatik.com) and Tenun Ikat Setia Cili (Jl. Ciung Wanara, Gianyar), the latter where you can see women artisans weaving the cloth with looms at the back of the shop. However, for a more wide-ranging price, take a stroll at the Sukawati Market (around 25 minutes from Ubud). Though perhaps more renowned for its artwork scene, you may find quality Ikat textiles made by the region’s artisans with the most expensive one is around 1.5 million. Or you can also visit the village of Sidemen, to the south of Ubud, to get your hands on their version of Ikat known as endek with intricate motifs ranging from the local flora and fauna to mythological Balinese figures that are worn mostly for religious ceremonies.

Indians Gone Wild – Why Bali is the Latest Holiday Hotspot

January 18, 2018

Bali and the Smell of New Shoes

Choosing a holiday destination is a bit like buying a pair of shoes. They have to be comfortable, first off. Then we ask ourselves do they look good? Always nice to have something you can wear out at night time as well as the day, right? But the most important question we ask ourselves when buying shoes….I mean….holiday destinations - “ is it really me?”

It used to be fashionable to throw a dart at a world map and follow its flight by booking yours to
wherever it landed, but, to be honest, that could find you in some ridiculously far-off places, amongst a bunch of what only looked like human beings just staring back at you, plus no nice food to eat. But, if you are a traditionalist and still fancy your chances at a game of Let the Dart Decide, be my guest. If not take my word for it instead, Bali is amazing.

Gajah Tour, door to door service

We stayed in an amazing Villa resort just a short walk from Ubud for a family Bali golf safari. So,
let’s test out those shoe-buying rules. Was it comfortable? It was so comfortable we never wanted to leave. Was it nice at night time as well as the day? It was so nice we never wanted to leave. Was it really me? It was so ‘us’ we never wan…. You get the picture. It was perfect.

Ubud Raya Hotel Budget Hotel

But of course, we had to leave the majesty of our villa to discover what was on offer in Bali and it appears my dear Indian friends in Bali, the rumors are true - this is definitely the hottest new holiday destination around. And I’m not just talking about the weather. Bali has everything Indian holiday makers could ask for and then a little bit more.

Of course, the sunny weather is a bonus. If you are anything like us, escaping the chilly city for the perfectly tempered beach scene is just too tempting at this time of year. The South offers an array of beaches to choose from and a gentle bicycle ride through the rice paddy fields is the number one antidote to fast-paced city life. But don’t be fooled into thinking there is nothing to do but laze around!

Bali is the perfect balance of nature and adventure and, along with the beautiful scenery and peaceful
moments, there is also a treasure trove of wild and outrageously fun ways to spend your hard-earned
cash.

Watersports are a big-time pastime on Bali with windsurfing, kitesurfing, ‘boogie’ boarding, paragliding, water jetpacks, Banana Boat rides and more on offer. Tanjung Benoa Peninsula is the favoured area for making a splash and, for surfing - which is crazy popular in Bali - try Kuta, Kermas in the east, the black sand beach breaks of Medewi and Canggu in the west and the more challenging reefs around the Bukit Peninsula.

Bali is prime-time, real-deal, amazing for scuba diving. The crystal clear waters give view to incredible marine life and coral reefs. Divers can see manta rays, turtles and sharks on some awesome dives including drop-off walls, shipwreck dives, and drift diving. Best spots to dive during the rainy season are Menjangan Island and Pemuteran on the North coast. Go, go! It seems even miracles can happen in Bali. Take a day trip to a nearby Nusa (meaning island) such as Nusa Penida, Nusa Ceningan or Nusa Lembongan, where you can walk on the seabed!

If you are looking for even more of a challenge, then we dare you to try white water rafting. Take the wildest rides of your lives on the Ayung River in Ubud or Telaga Waja. Meanwhile back on land, but still in keeping with the fun junkie program, how about a high-adrenaline Volcano Trek. You can hike the Kintamani volcano or cross over to Java and hike the Kawah Ijen volcano. The view will just blow your mind! Looking for exhausted of a different kind? You can shop ‘til you drop in Bali with an exciting range of treats from hand-painted Batiks, designer clothing and beautiful, hand carved home furnishings to art, antiques, jewelry and more. If shopping in the markets as opposed to the malls you can pull out your best bargaining skills to make sure you are paying good prices.

Did you know, the Balinese people, have a passion for Indian cinema? They are such a sweet and welcoming people. It’s no wonder so many celebrities love to holiday on the island. Actresses Alia
Bhatt and Jacqueline Fernandez have both been seen looking more than sizzling on sunbeds and Bipasha Basu and Karan Singh were spotted on (yet another) romantic break in Bali recently. We don’t blame them - this is one of the most romantic islands you could imagine. It has been well reported that Bali is a favorite for weddings and honeymoons and I can totally see why.
It’s also a Hindu country. Ok, ok, not everyone wants to visit temples on holiday but it has to be said we did feel more comfortable (see shoe buying rule number one) in familiar surroundings. Just a touch of home never did anyone any harm and some of the temples have breathtaking views. We suggest Besakih, Goa Gajah, Ulun Danu and Tanah lot where we recommend you visit after lunch and stay until sunset.

After dark, Bali is just as buzzy so get your best shoes on and get dancing. Clubs include Mirror Bali
Lounge, Jenja or Opivm in Seminyak or the SkyDome Super Club or Bounty in Legian, Ubud also offer Jazz venue and live music. So..about those shoes, to ask yourself the question “is it really me?” You would have to try the shoe on first, wouldn’t you? So go. Go, go, go to Bali. It will be you. It’s everyone. And they are all human beings. Plus the food is great. Thank Goodness.

Top 10 most amazing maps of Bali you've ever seen

December 12, 2017

Hi Guys!  Looking for an awesome map to hang on your wall? I am so excited and will be in Bali this Sunday, September 16. I realized I need a map of Bali in my walls so I search online and I find the 10 more amazing map of Bali, but I would like a big map to cover the big wall in my living room in Bali and I choose the number nine. A collection of quirky, important and creative maps that bring data and facts to life in Bali and help you to find new places on the island.

Double Six Luxury Hotel, Ocean View apartments in Bali.

September 12, 2017

Seminyak is a unique area in Bali where you can combine bright nightlife, relaxing and endless fun. People from all over the world come here for surfing, authentic dining and luxury service. No matter if you’re a honeymoon couple or crazy party chaser you’ll find everything you need here in Seminyak! It's also the centre of life for the island's expats (many of whom own boutiques, design clothes, surf, or do seemingly nothing at all).

We were looking for somewhere exceptional to visit over a weekend. Finally we chose the Double Six Luxury Hotel, Seminyak; it's located right on one of the most popular beaches in Bali. Before coming here we had heard a lot of good reviews about it but you’ll never know until you try it yourself!

The first thing that impressed me is the warm welcome guests received on arrival. On this occasion we were met by the hotel manager shaking our hands which made us feel VIP. He explained that they try and make every guest feel VIP from the very beginning.

There are a lot of Balinese staff in the tall beautiful lobby wearing the same light uniform: somebody takes your bag, the others take you for a little excursion around the hotel territory telling you about the amenities and facilities that are available. What you'll notice is that there are plenty of them including a gym and spa which is considered one of the best on the island. Furthermore, there are two excellent restaurants and two bars, a 130m swimming pool, the hotel’s private beach and the place they call Owner’s Lounge with complimentary drinks, shower, locker etc. This is so guests on check out don’t have to wait for their flight in the lobby, they are still able to use all the hotel amenities for their comfort.

Wow, that sounds great! So where’s the front desk to check in? No, it doesn’t work like that. We went straight to our room where our bags were already waiting for us and the check-in is done right there. This is convenient to say the least when you sign the papers and pay by credit card, sitting on a comfortable sofa in your room sipping your welcome drink, isn’t it?

And yes, a couple of words about the welcome drinks. They look really impressive! The staff brought a tray with two green steaming cocktails and two shots on the side. That was vodka and they offered to add it to the cocktail as they found out we were Russians! That was really funny and I appreciated the sense of humor and the individual approach.

In total there are 154 rooms, across 5 levels at the Double Six Luxury Hotel. Mostly, they are spacious one and two bedroom luxury suites with an amazing view of the Indian ocean. Some ground floor suites even have direct pool access right from your terrace. The design is modern with colorful lighting, big spacious bathrooms, and stylish furniture.

The suite we booked was called The Penthouse. It was one of multiple Bali Suites penthouse suites located across the hotel. They include a two-level and two-bedroom suite with a private jacuzzi and a sunbathing area on the second floor and a fully fitted kitchen. Let me tell you, these suites are so large they are impressive! You may need to pack a Sat Nav. (Haha) We certainly felt very comfortable and at home and were able to relax in our own luxury residence in the heart of Seminyak. On this occasion we didn’t want to go anywhere so we ordered lunch to the room and enjoyed it looking over the pool, the ocean and surfers riding the waves right from our balcony.

Bali is a sunny island so it was a good idea to spend some time on the second floor of the Penthouse relaxing in the jacuzzi and our own sun loungers. The open rooftop is rather big and inspired me to do some yoga and acrobatics making me feel like the king of the world. One weekend is not enough for me and would love to live like that all the time!

The hotel provides a long swimming pool with its own bar, sun chairs and loungers, and bridges across the pool leading to the hotel's private beach. We had a lot of fun there lying and jumping on an inflatable flamingo, listening to music and talking to the people who stay or even live in the Double-Six Luxury Hotel. As we found out, people not only stay here for a vacation but that you can also buy one of these luxury suites. Just imagine yourself as an owner of a piece of this paradise! Double-Six Luxury Hotel Seminyak is offering great investment opportunities which include; guaranteed ROI’s, free stay options and exclusive VIP cards. As an owner, you will receive discounts to sister outlets and some top Bali facilities and attractions. This extends a great opportunity to be a part of that success!

Every sunset in Bali is like a special event. People prefer watching the sunset to watching movies here on the island of Gods! They do it on the beach or sitting at a bar with a nice view. We decided to go the second way and went to the rooftop bar in our hotel for the sunset. It’s a famous place in Seminyak; we’ve booked a table before and didn’t regret it! The tables here are round and you’re sitting like in your own island surrounded by the water which is reflecting the charming evening sky. It’s so nice to have a place like that in the same building you stay in! To have a couple of aperitifs before the dinner listening to chill music and watching the uninterrupted view of the sunset over the Indian Ocean without any need to drive or take a taxi!

For dinner, we went to the Plantation Grill Restaurant which is also inside the hotel but very famous and well known amongst travelers and residents outside. You are also better to book your table beforehand as it's very popular. If you come here you’ll understand why. From the very entrance, I was impressed to be the vaulted double-height ceiling and huge glass windows looking out to the ocean. Its style is twenties luxury, with marble finishes. The restaurants' specialties are meat and seafood but before ordering we just walked around admiring the details and the interior. I won’t tell you about the food taste because you just won't get to know how amazing it was from words on a page but it doesn't disappoint and truly makes you salivate before you've even had your first bite! All I can say is that our dinner was a great ending to a fabulous day!

In conclusion, I can say that we had a really happy weekend and I only wish it could have lasted longer. The hotel offers an iconic vision of luxury and represents amazing hospitality and facilities in combination with an award-winning dining experience.

Together this makes Double-Six Luxury Hotel Seminyak an amazing place for booking a suite for a vacation in Bali. For those who can, buying a slice of paradise and living right on the beach in the center of the islands' life! In Bali, dreams come true!

Double-Six Luxury Hotel

The swanky suites offer complimentary 24-hour butler service, balconies, and flat-screen TVs both in-room and above the bathtub. All also provide sound systems, Wi-Fi, espresso machines and tea making facilities, along with safe deposit boxes and mini bars. Upgraded suites add ocean views and private plunge pools.

There are 5 restaurants and bars, including a rooftop bar, a martini lounge, a grill, and an Italian restaurant. Other amenities include an upscale spa, a fitness center, and an outdoor pool

Scenes from Bali

August 30, 2017

The unprecedented amount of peoples arrive this month in Bali "beyond anything experienced" has led amazing twitter posted this week.

Where to Eat in Bukit?

August 28, 2017

It’s the peninsula in the south of Bali with white sand beaches, beautiful cliffs and famous surf spots. Surfing is really popular in Bali, people of different nations come here to spend every day catching the waves.Though it looks cool it’s very tiring, so with that in mind you need to eat good nutritious food to give you the energy needed.

I’m going to tell you about a nice place just for that in Bukit!

Today we’re not talking about any famous luxury restaurant. I heard about this place through a friend; who also found it by recommendation. And so now feel it's only fair to share the experience for others to discover this amazing place.

We go quite often for a breakfast or a lunch to Bukit Sausage Cafe in Uluwatu, Bukit. Ai, a Japanese lady is the owner of this family small cafe and here’s her story.

She has a little son who simply likes sausages. He always asked his mother to cook them but she understood that most of the sausages in shops are full of harmless additives and are commonly not really made of quality meat but of tissue and other ingredients to bulk them out. That was not the food she wanted for her child so she decided to learn how to make her own sausages.

Having created such a delicious quality sausage the child liked it much more and before long was taking them for lunch at school.Quickly word spread amongst the children who had tasted her sausages and went on to ask their parents for the same. This was the beginning of her business as parents were asking to buy them, preferring her natural recipe over the shop bought variety.

The main idea behind Bukit Sausage cafe is that the food is natural, everything is homemade with quality ingredients, even mustard, ketchup and even cheesecake for desert.

When I first came here for breakfast I was delighted by the service and choice. It may look like a small warung (street cafe) but delivers a great restaurant experience. As you can guess from the name the main dish is sausage. There are three different types of it and many combinations of dishes including their signature dish.

As Ai told me, the technology is simple; they take fresh meat, grind it, add natural spices into pork casings, vacuum pack them and freeze immediately. They never pre-cook it or add artificial preservatives. Actually you can feel it and there's one thing I can tell for sure; once you go fresh you’ll never go back! It has a Japanese recipe but tastes like the best German one!Another option for meat lovers is smoked chicken and fish. Furthermore customers who chose this have a special place where you can see how they make it right before you eat it.Also if you're a vegetarian and you think this cafe is not for you, you'd definitely be rushing to conclusions! Once I came here with my friend who doesn't eat meat and  she was really surprised with the variety of meals for her including pumpkin focaccia, various quesadillas and a big vegetarian plate!

I’ll recommend you another thing as a must try in this place. Do you like desserts? Of course you do! Usually it’s not good for your weight loss program! But not this one!The owner brought us her dessert plate. It was a homemade cheesecake with strawberry and sorbet made of fresh mango, passion fruit and soursop. When I tried it I felt all the love of a mother who cooks for her family and shares it with you and felt blessed to be able to eat food this good made purely and lovingly from scratch.

What can I say? If you’re looking for healthy food in Uluwatu, you should visit Bukit Sausage Cafe. There you get luxury restaurant food for a warung (cafe) price!
